Why Patriot Mail rewrites HTTP links into HTTPS ones?

Some emails, especially older newsletters, contain links that start with http:// instead of https://. Pages opened over http:// are not private: others on the same network can see them, and they can even be changed on the way to you. Patriot Mail automatically changes these links to the secure https:// version before showing you the email.

Automatic

Nothing for you to do

Links are updated before the email appears on your screen. You keep clicking links exactly like before.

Private

Your browsing stays yours

Secure links make sure nobody between you and the website can read or change the page you open.

Reliable

Links keep working

Nearly every website today supports secure connections, so the updated link opens the same page as before.

How it works

What happens to the link

The address of the link stays exactly the same. Only the way your browser connects to it changes.

1

The email arrives

A newsletter or an older email contains a link that starts with http://, the insecure way of opening a website.

2

Patriot Mail updates it

Before the email is shown, Patriot Mail changes http:// to https://. It is the same address, opened securely.

3

You click as usual

The link opens in a new tab over a secure connection. You can see the padlock in your browser's address bar.

Why this matters

Small change, real protection

Privacy

Nobody looks over your shoulder

On an insecure connection, others on the same network, for example public Wi-Fi in a cafe, can see the exact pages you visit. A secure connection hides that.

Trust

The page arrives unchanged

An insecure page can be altered on its way to you, for example to add fake content. A secure connection makes sure what you see is what the website sent.

No dead links

Links stay clickable

Many email apps simply remove insecure links, leaving text you cannot click. Patriot Mail keeps the link working by making it secure instead.

For technical users

Fully transparent

Every rewritten link is noted in the browser's developer console, so you can always check what was changed.

Good to know

If a link does not open

A very small number of old websites only work over an insecure connection. If a link from an email does not open, that website does not support secure connections at all. Treat such sites with extra care: do not enter passwords or payment details there. If you are unsure, contact our support team and we will help you check it.
