BT Email IMAP Settings and Setup

BT Email works with Patriot Mail and any other email app, with one thing to do first: BT asks you to create an app password and use that in place of your normal BT password.

Server settings

What to enter, if an app asks you

Patriot Mail fills these in for you. They are here for any other app that asks, and so you can check what you were given.

What is different about BT Email

Worth knowing

An app password, not your BT password

BT keeps your own password for its website and asks email apps to use a separate one you create in your BT account. It is entered once and you do not have to remember it.

Worth knowing

Older BT addresses work the same way

Addresses at btopenworld.com, talk21.com and bt.com are BT mailboxes on the same servers, whichever one you were given.

Step by step

How to connect BT Email

1

Create an app password in your BT account

Sign in at bt.com, open your email settings, and create an app password for mail. Copy it before you leave the page.

2

Add the account to Patriot Mail

Choose Add account, enter your full BT address, and paste the app password into the password field. The server names are filled in for you.

3

If it does not connect

Create a fresh app password and try once more. A BT website password typed into an email app is the usual cause.

Common questions

BT Email and Patriot Mail

What are the IMAP settings for BT Email?

mail.btinternet.com on port 993 with SSL for incoming mail, and mail.btinternet.com on port 465 with SSL for outgoing mail. Your username is your full email address.

Why will my BT password not work in an email app?

BT asks for an app password instead. You create one in your BT account, use it in place of your password, and your own password keeps working on the BT website.

Do btopenworld.com and talk21.com addresses still work?

Yes. They are BT mailboxes and use the same servers and the same app password as a btinternet.com address.

Will connecting BT to Patriot Mail change my address?

No. Patriot Mail connects to the BT mailbox you already have, so your address stays the same and your mail stays with BT.

Keep your BT Email address

Patriot Mail connects the mailbox you already have. Your address does not change, your mail stays with BT Email, and it is free to use.
