Telstra and BigPond IMAP Settings and Setup

Telstra Mail works with Patriot Mail and any other email app. Telstra rejects your normal account password in an email app, so you generate an app-specific password in Telstra Webmail and use that instead.

What to enter, if an app asks you

Patriot Mail fills these in for you. They are here for any other app that asks, and so you can check what you were given.

What is different about Telstra Mail

Worth knowing

An app-specific password is required

Telstra refuses your account password in email apps. You generate a separate one in Telstra Webmail, name it for the device, and paste it in here.

Worth knowing

BigPond addresses are Telstra addresses

bigpond.com and bigpond.net.au are Telstra mailboxes on the same servers. The brand changed; the mailbox did not.

Step by step

How to connect Telstra Mail

1

Generate an app-specific password

Sign in to Telstra Webmail in a browser, open Settings, then Accounts, and generate an app-specific password. Give it a name you will recognize later.

2

Add the account to Patriot Mail

Choose Add account, enter your full Telstra or BigPond address, and paste the generated password rather than your own.

3

If it does not connect

Generate a fresh password and use that. Each one is shown only when it is created, so a half-copied password is a common cause.
